Emblems: Emblems are non-verbal cues that
have a verbal counterpart. For example, the British sign for victory symbolises
the letter V, but the same symbolise the number two in US. Emblems are such a
confusing collection of different meanings. In short, emblems are signs used to
refer to certain words. Its interpretation may vary across different cultures
and groups of people.

Illustrators: Gestures that explain the verbal
message through sign or symbols are called illustrators. For example, showing
two fingers while referring to two things and stroking stomach while one is
hungry.

Affect displays: They reveal the state of mind.
They can be displayed through the emotions that are seen on the face. They
include happiness, sadness, anger, joy, shock, surprise, fear, disgust,
interest, etc.

Regulators: Non-words, like ub-bub, mm-mm,bummmm are clues that
inform the speaker whether you are agree or disagree. For example, bummm followed by a full stop shows
agreement, whereas bummm followed by
a question mark shows doubt or disagreement.
(5) Adaptors: Adaptors include postural changes
and other movements at a low level of awareness, frequently made to feel more
comfortable or to perform a specific physical function.
For example, If you lean forward it implies that you are open and
interested.
